William Hill has announced that its overall revenue for the first half of 2010 has been boosted by the World Cup. The online casino and bookmaker, has suggested that net revenue increased by 3%, with purely online revenue increasing by 24%. According to figures released today, William Hill’s overall profit from 1st January – 29th June totalled £135 million.

The World Cup has proven to be a huge success for online betting websites and it’s estimated William Hill received £1 billion in wagers on tournament matches. Bettors have also earned cash from the World Cup, with one lucky punter, who wagered through William Hill, receiving an incredible £275,000, after wagering in Spain to win the tournament.

According to reports released by William Hill, revenue was considerably boosted by “in-play” online betting on tournament matches. However, in our recent news item on Paul – the octopus who correctly predicted the outcome of the World Cup, William Hill suggested they had lost £500 million from the aquatic creature’s football know-how. Ralph Topping, the chief executive of William Hill, has suggested that the figures published highlight how the World Cup has “proved to be one of the best for bookmakers in 40 years”.
