Wimbledon Smeared by Betting Scandal
While it’s usually football which comes under derision for alleged match-fixing, bookies William Hill have had to call off all bets on a recent tennis match, sparking fears that Wimbledon may become embroiled in a betting scandal.
The Times have reported that officials at Wimbledon are on red “alert” after several bookies, including the aforementioned William Hill, called off bets on a grass court match in the Netherlands, when many started placing bets on the prospect of Óscar Hernández beating Daniel Köllerer. Hernández did win the match and throughout the game bookies rapidly reduced their odds on the player; going from 5-6 to 1-5 and then finally calling off all bets.
It’s now been revealed that Hernández and Köllerer will be playing each other in Wimbledon and a recent video clip of the two at the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has surfaced, which shows the two discussing their post-match performances briefly, with Hernández suggesting to Köllerer, “you are so bad”.
Roger Federer, who is chairman of the ATP players’ council, suggested the following regarding the recent betting scandal: “It is never good for tennis when we hear of things like this and it is in the players' power to control what they do at all times. That is the message to get across.”
