Since the British Government’s ‘whitelisting’ of certain gaming jurisdictions, UK based online casinos have flourished in recent years. The 2005 Gambling Act contained a list of jurisdictions where gambling licenses were granted that the British government deemed to be trustworthy and has since been dubbed the ‘whitelist’. Only online casinos based in jurisdictions such as Malta and Gibraltar were allowed to advertise in the United Kingdom. As many online casinos, in an effort to be recognised as a safe choice, flocked to these jurisdictions, more began advertising on television, thus allowing the British public open access to online gaming.

Milestones in British Gambling History
- 1886
Mr Schwind and Mr Pennington set themselves up as commission agents, backing horses which were trained at Ladbroke Hall in Worcestershire.
- 1902
Arthur Bendir joins Schwind and Pennington and gives the title ‘Ladbrokes’ to their enterprise. Bendir also suggests the trio become a bookmakers.
- 1926
Joe Coral begins a bookmaking business, using the name “Coral”.
- 1934
William Hill opens his first betting shop, of the same name.
- 1956
Cyril Stein and Max Parker acquire Ladbrokes.
- 1960
The Government allows betting shops not just on the racetrack, but on high streets too.
- 1961
Joe Coral opens his first bookmakers shop.
- 1967
Cyril Stein is made chairman of Ladbrokes and floats the company on the London Stock Exchange.
- 1971
Sears Holdings acquire William Hill.
- 1981
Coral is acquired by Bass. At this point in time, Coral is one of the largest leisure/gambling groups in the UK.
- 1988
Grand Metropolitan then buys William Hill from Sears Holdings.
- 1994
Microgaming launches their first casino, which they claim to be the first online casino in the world.
- 1994
Camelot Group first acquires a license to run the National Lottery.
- 1995
Andrew and Mark Rivkin create Cryptologic in their parent’s basement.
- 1996
Intercasino launches using Cryptologic software.
- 1996
Casino-On-Net.com is launched by an Israeli dentist called Arron Shaked. Casino-On-Net would later become known as 888.com.
- 1997
iGlobalMedia founded by Ruth Parasol starts to develop casino reviews sites and its own casino called Star Luck Casino. iGlobalMedia is now better known as Party Poker.
- 1999
Playtech is created and launched with Teddy Sagi as a primary investor.
- 1999
Andrew Black and Edward Wray launch Betfair.
- 2000
Ladbrokes moved into the online gaming industry and launched its first betting services for internet users.
- 2000
Ed Ware leaves his job as Managing Director of Ladbrokes to create 32Red Casino.
- 2001
Intercasino is voted best online casino by Gambling Online Magazine. They hold the title until 2006.
- 2001
PartyPoker.com launches.
- 2002
William Hill is first listed on the London Stock Exchange.
- 2002
Spin Palace Casino wins CasinoMeister’s Best New Casino award.
- 2003
32Red Casino wins CasinoMeister’s Best Casino award. The casino still holds the title.
- 2003
Betfair win the Queen’s Award for enterprise. They go on to win the award again in 2008.
- 2005
UK Gambling Act is introduced, which regulates all forms of gambling. The Gambling Act also introduces whitelisted jurisdictions, which means that casinos licensed there can advertise in the UK.
- 2005
Party Poker floats on the London Stock Exchange.
- 2005
UK Gambling Commission takes over from the Gaming Board for Great Britain and regulates commercial gambling in Britain, aside from spread betting and the National Lottery.
- 2006
Playtech floats on the London Stock Exchange.
- 2007
Ladbrokes become the first bookmakers to advertise on national television.
- 2007
Betfair win eGaming Review’s Operator of the Year award.
- 2008
Antigua is added to the list of whitelisted jurisdictions. Casinos licensed there can now advertise in the UK.
- 2009
William Hill moves its casino from Cryptologic software to Playtech.
- 2009
Torquay councillors agree to new legislation, which will allow small casinos to operate in the coastal area.
- 2009
Police begin to investigate UEFA officials and football teams on charges relating to match-fixing.
- 2010
Ladbrokes’ chief executive, Chris Bell, announces that he’ll be stepping down in the summer. Speculation begins as to who will replace Bell.
- 2010
The Government announces that it will begin a new consultation process with regards to gambling legislation in the UK.
