Getting to Grips with a Classic

Baccarat originated in Italy but is now played in one form or another across the world. There are two players in a game of baccarat, the 'Player' and 'Banker' (the House).

Both players get dealt two cards. Beforehand, gamblers around the table bet on who they think will have the highest card total. The two cards are added up, with tens and picture cards counting as zero, and aces counting as 1 point. All other cards count as their face value. The aim is to get as close to, or equal to, 9.

For example, the dealer (Banker) gets dealt K-9. His total score is 9 (0 for the picture card plus 9).

The Player gets dealt A-5. He therefore has a total of six (1 for the ace, plus the 5).

If the total is above 10, you take away 10 to get your total. So, if a hand is 9-8 that makes 17. You take away 10 to arrive at 7.

In this example, the Banker wins. Anyone who bet on a Banker win gets paid out. A winning Player bet pays out 1/1 (even money). A winning Banker bet pays out 1/1 too, minus a 5-percent cut for the casino (making it an actual 19/20 payout). You can also bet on the two players tying, which pays 8/1.

Third Card Rules: In some cases, a third card may be drawn to get closer to 9. For the Player, if the value of the first two cards is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, a third card is dealt. A 6 or 7 takes no more cards, while an 8 or 9 is a 'natural hand'.

For the Banker, if he gets a 0, 1 or 2, he always draws a third card. If he has a 3, 4, 5, or 6, he will draw depending on what the Player has.

For example, the Player gets dealt J-3 (for a total of 0+3 = 3). The Banker gets dealt 3-2, for a total of 5. The Player draws on his 3 and receives a 10, giving him a total of 3. The Banker wins with his higher total.

Enjoy the Perks

The house edge in casino baccarat comes with the Banker taking a small cut. The actual house edge of baccarat is 1.06 percent when played at a casino online. This puts it low down on the scale of games that have a big casino edge.

Sometimes when playing baccarat online in the UK, you will be allowed extra bets. You can place side bets like a Player Pair or Banker Pair (both 11/1), or a Perfect Pair (25/1) where both the Player or Banker's cards form a pair of the same suit.

If baccarat is too dull, you can enjoy many other variants of the game on most sites, including the popular live dealer version. Punto Banco gives gamblers a little more choice in the kinds of bets they can make, like the exact totals of both players' cards. However, players have little choice about what cards they can and can't draw.

Chemin de Fer is rare at casino online sites but is the original version of baccarat. Players have the option to take on another player's bets. The banker receives two cards, but so do ALL the participating players. It's then a contest to see who gets nearest to the 9 total.

Online Casino Games: Baccarat FAQs

We have found that although baccarat is known as a high roller game, you certainly don’t need to be a big spender to play this exciting card game online. Unlike blackjack, you can’t bust when you play baccarat. With baccarat, which is played between the dealer and player, the winner is the one who gets a perfect nine or as close to nine as possible. If you’re new to this classic casino table game and an online casino UK player, please utilize the baccarat FAQs compiled by the staff at Casino Online.

  • Is online baccarat legal to play?

Yes, we can confirm that online baccarat is legal, as the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) regulates Internet-based casinos. It was under the Gambling Act 2005 that online casino baccarat and other table games and forms of gambling became legally available to UK players. The UKGC regulates the gaming industry and creates administers licensing agencies within the UK for both land-based and online casinos.

  • Where can I find it?

You’ll discover baccarat at many casinos available to UK players. To find great online casinos, please be sure to check the information on this page provided by our expert staff. We can can connect you to real money casinos that offer this popular game. You can also find the live dealer variation of this game at many of our recommended sites.

  • How is it different to regular baccarat?

Overall, online baccarat is played the same as that as the land-based game. It pays 0.95: 1 when the player wins, 1:1 on bank wins, and 8:1 on draws. You can bet on either of three outcomes.

Online there are some differences. At some online casinos, the tie pays 9:1. Also, at land-based casinos, the player can elect to be the bank. In order to do so, they must be able to cover all bets. Being the bank is preferable as the banker always collects a 5% commission. This option is not available when you play baccarat online.

  • Is it popular in the UK?

CasinoOnline.co.uk has found that baccarat is one of the most popular UK online casino games at any casino. It’s easy to learn, plays quickly, and is governed by specific rules that determine exactly what play must be made next. The game also plays quickly, allowing for players to enjoy numerous hands in a short span of time.

  • How much is it possible to win?

How much one can win on baccarat depends upon how much one is willing to bet per hand. As noted, baccarat pays 1:1 for player wins, 1:1 for banker wins (minus a 5% commission), and 8:1 for a draw. Some online casinos will allow you to bet on what the tie number will be. The basic tie bet is very hard to hit and this additional bonus wager, which pays well, is just about impossible to hit.

Two of the three basic bets come with a low house edge. This is good news for those who are playing baccarat online, as a low house edge translates into a small advantage for the casino. The banker bet offers you the best chance of winning, as the house edge is at 1.06%. Of course, when you win that wager, 5% will be deducted from your winnings.

The player bet offers a house edge that’s a bit higher, 1.24%. However, there’s no commission associated with this bet. It’s still a good wager to make. The bet that it’s advised you stay away from is the tie. Although it pays well, 8:1, the house edge is an extraordinary 14.4%. It’s a bad bet to make.

How much you can win playing baccarat online depends on a few factors, including the size of your bet as the more you bet the more you stand to win or lose. Also, the size of your bankroll will determine how many bets you can make, which influences your chances of winning and, thus, how much you stand to win.

As an example, if you have a bankroll of £1,000 and make £10, you’ll have a total of 100 bets available, whereas a bankroll of £100 at £10 per wager offers you 10 bets. The larger bankroll gives you more margin of error, allowing you to ride out losing streaks and take advantage of winning streaks.

Baccarat minimums and maximums vary at online casinos. Our expert researchers have found that some casinos will allow minimum bets of £1.00, while others may be at £5.00. High roller tables will allow wagers of £200 and even higher. Of course to make such a bet, you’ll need a huge bankroll.

  • Are the games rigged?

We can say with assurance that online casino games such as baccarat are never rigged. The fact is an online casino can make plenty of profit with an honest game. This is due to the volume of play online, the house edge, and the tendency of certain players to assume much more risk than they should.

If you are concerned about online baccarat being rigged, we suggest that you protect yourself by playing at licensed casinos that are under the jurisdiction of the UKGC. Finally, we advise that its best to look at our carefully chosen list of reccomended casinos, each of which have a reputation for being honest, fair, and trustworthy.
