Your Guide to Play & Betting Types

If you've played European Roulette, you'll recognise the table layout. One of very few differences is that with French Roulette, the markings will be displayed in French.

Drag your chips to the areas of the table you want to bet on. You can place bets on individual numbers, groups of numbers like Odd/Even ('Pair'/'Impair') or Red/Black (Rouge/Noir) or the Columns. There will also be a racetrack where you can bet on groups of individual numbers based on where they sit on the wheel (Voisins du Zero, or 'Neighbours of Zero', and the Orphelins - the 'orphans').

There is only one green zero slot in French Roulette, like in European Roulette. This keeps the house edge down.

En Prison & La Partage Rules

With red and black numbers from 1-36 and a single green 0, French roulette plays very much like the European variation but with a key difference that has a huge impact for players—the La Partage and En Prison rule.

La Partage

When the ball lands on zero, the player loses only half of any even-money (red/black, odd/even etc.) bet that they have placed. The other half of the wager is returned to the player.

En Prison

Sometimes the En Prison rule is used in place of La Partage. When the ball lands on zero, a marker is placed on even-money bets and they are placed "in prison".

If the bet wins on the next spin, the real money wager is returned to the player (but no extra winnings are awarded). If the bet loses, the whole sum is lost. What happens if the ball lands on 0 depends on the casino online you're playing in.

These rule changes might seem pretty minor but, as we've seen above, they have a big impact on the house edge of the game and can help long-term players to seriously cut their losses over time.

House edge in roulette games:

  • American Roulette: 5.25%
  • European Roulette: 2.7%
  • French Roulette: 1.35% (for the outside bets where La Partage/En Prison plays)

Exploring the Perks

UK online casino players can usually find French Roulette at gambling sites in 2024. You'll even be able to play with a GBP bankroll. If you're unfamiliar with the rules, simply load up a free play table and get used to the En Prison side bets before committing real cash.

House edge is always something that players ignore. But with the insurance bets of La Partage and En Prison, you can reduce the casino's advantage further. European Roulette has a great house advantage of 2.7%, but 1.35% is even better for gamblers.

Online Casino Games - French Roulette FAQs

Roulette is a very exciting game to play at a land-based or an online casino. Casino Online has found that of the three major forms of roulette, the French version is the one that is least offered by online casinos. This may be due to the fact that French roulette has an extremely low house edge (1.35%) or due to the more complex betting rules, as French roulette has various call bets that neither American nor European roulette provides. If you are a roulette player, Casino Online advises that you try to find an online casino that offers the French version.

  • What is French Roulette?

French roulette is a game of chance involving a spinning wheel comprised of 37 numbers, a silver ball that is placed inside the wheel, and a betting table, that includes those same numbers that are on the wheel and various wagering options. Players can place various bets, including all of those allowed by European roulette, plus call bets.

  • Is it popular?

This form of roulette is not as popular as European or American, which may seem odd due to the fact that French roulette has a much lower house edge than the other two. Casino Online finds that because the game is more complex than American and European, plus it is much harder to find online, French roulette is not as well known as the other two.

  • How does it compare with American or European roulette?

Like European roulette, French roulette has numbers from 1 through 36 plus one zero. Plus, it includes all of the wagers that one can make when playing European roulette. There are also a series of call bets, which are unique to French roulette.
These bets are Voisins du Zero, which is translated as “Zero’s Neighbors”, and may be made on the 17 numerals around zero (2, 3, 4, 7, 12, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, 29, 32, and 35); Tiers du Cylindre, which in English is “One-Third of the Wheel”, and is placed on those one-dozen digits that are directly across from the zero on the wheel (5, 8, 10, 11, 13, 16, 23, 24, 26, 27, 30), and 33); and Orphelins, which means “Orphans”, and are placed on those eight numerals that are not included in the two previous bets (1, 6, 9, 14, 17, 20, 31, and 34).
Another call bet that may be made is Finales en Plein, which is a wager put on the end of a specific digit and covers all numbers that end in that digit. An example is Finales en Plein 6, which is a bet on 6, 16, 26, and 36. Also, there is Finales a Cheval, which is a bet placed on numbers that end in either of two digits. An example would be 4/5, which would cover 4, 5, 14, 15, 24, 25, 34, and 35.

Finally, French roulette uses one of two rules known as La Partage and En Prison. These rules give players a second chance at winning any even money wager after a zero is spun. A French roulette table will offer either La Partage or En Prison and not both.

La Partage gives players half of their wager back on any even money bet when a zero comes up. The other half is still active on the next spin of the wheel and pays off if won or is taken by the house if lost. The En Prison rule leaves the wager on the table when a zero comes up and a player has made an even money wager. If on the next spin the player wins the bet, their original wager only is returned; if they lose the bet, they lose their entire wager.

  • How do the odds compare?

Like European roulette, French roulette offers actual odds of 36-1, but the payout odds are 35-1. French roulette has the lowest house edge of the three (1.35%). French roulette offers an edge of 2.70% and American of 5.28%, making French roulette the best in terms of odds.

  • Where can I play?

French roulette is harder to find than the other two, but it is available at online casinos such as Casion.com, All Slots Casino, and The Gaming Club. You’ll find French roulette at many Microgaming casinos.

  • Can I use a roulette strategy?

Whether you play roulette at a land-based or an online casino there is no version that responds to any specific strategy. This is because roulette is a pure game of chance and there is no way to control outcomes. The best thing that Casino Online feels players can do with French roulette is to focus on even odds bets, double down when ahead, and play various other low odds wagers.

  • Is it rigged?

If you are an online casino UK player who likes to play French roulette and is a member of any Whitelisted UK casino, then you can be about as certain as anyone can be that the game you’re playing is not rigged. Casinos that are Whitelisted, that is licensed and regulated by the UK Gaming Commission, have to meet high standards for fairness.

All online casino games are controlled by a random number generator that is part of the game’s software and installed and set at the time of manufacturing. Online French roulette games have been tested prior to being put into service and are periodically tested for fairness by an independent contractor. Casino Online advises that if you have questions regarding the games at any Whitelisted online UK casino, you can easily access and check test results.
